Kalamazoo community mourns Julie Deppner, respected educator and community leader, after fatal accident
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Kalamazoo community, along with friends and colleagues from Chelsea, is grieving the loss of Julie Deppner, 57, who passed away after an accident on Saturday, December 13, 2025, at Corewell Hospital in Grand Rapids.

A Life Dedicated to Education and Community

Julie Deppner was a respected and influential leader in Michigan education and senior care. A graduate of Clarkston High School and Central Michigan University, she began her career as a math teacher.

She served the Chelsea School District for decades, rising from a high school teacher to Assistant Superintendent. In 2016, she transitioned to leadership in senior living, becoming CEO of Silver Maples in Chelsea and, most recently, President and CEO of the Heritage Community of Kalamazoo.

“Making connections is what Julie was all about,” a family statement noted. Her warm personality and dedication were felt through her involvement in Rotary, the Chamber of Commerce, and numerous service organizations.

Family, Funeral Arrangements, and Legacy

Julie Deppner is survived by her husband of 35 years, Dennis H. Deppner; her mother, Gari Monroe; two sons, Nicholas and Drew; her sister, Carrie Phillips; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Evan; her father, Albert Monroe; and a sister, Shelly Goodge.

An avid supporter of her sons’ activities and a talented decorator, family was her greatest joy.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 18, at the First United Methodist Church of Chelsea. Visitation is scheduled at Cole Funeral Chapel on Wednesday from 2-5 p.m. and 6-9 p.m., and at the church on Thursday from 1-2 p.m. Burial at Oak Grove East Cemetery will be at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Silver Linings Fund at Silver Maples, the building fund at Heritage of Kalamazoo, or the Chelsea Education Foundation.
