FREMONT, Calif. — A 69-year-old Fremont man died Friday after being struck by a tractor-trailer while riding his bicycle on Osgood Road, police said.
The collision occurred shortly after 12:20 p.m. on Jan. 2 in the area near Auto Mall Parkway, according to the Fremont Police Department. Danny Chiu was biking southbound on Osgood Road when a northbound semi-truck began to turn left into a business parking lot and struck his bicycle with the front driver’s side of the vehicle.
Emergency crews responded to the scene, but Chiu was pronounced dead at the location. The truck driver remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. Police do not believe impairment from drugs or alcohol was a factor in the crash.
This incident marks the first traffic-related fatality in Fremont this year, officials noted. The Fremont Police Department’s Traffic Unit continues to investigate the collision and is asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has information to contact them.
Authorities have urged local bicyclists and motorists to be cautious on busy roadways and intersections, particularly when large commercial vehicles are turning or merging.
