Frank Cignetti Sr. Obituary — The national college football community and the town of Indiana, Pennsylvania, are mourning the loss of Frank J. Cignetti, a Hall of Fame coach and beloved local patriarch whose life was defined by his deep faith, devotion to family, and the profound impact he had on generations of players and coaches. Known affectionately as “Big Guy,” Cignetti was 88.
Born in Paulton, Washington Township, on October 8, 1937, Cignetti carried the values of his western Pennsylvania roots throughout his four-decade coaching career. His journey culminated in his induction into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2013, an honor that recognized not only his strategic brilliance but his foundational philosophy of integrity, teamwork, and dedication.
“Frank led teams with the same principles he valued in life,” a former colleague and player said. “He treated players and coaches as extended family, giving them opportunities and guidance that shaped their lives long after they left the field.”
A Life Centered on Family and Faith
While celebrated nationally for his football acumen, Cignetti’s proudest role was as a husband, father, and grandfather. He married his high school sweetheart, Marlene Kocon, in 1960, and together they raised four children: Curt, Lisa, Frank Jr., and Theresa. His family grew to include twelve grandchildren, whom he supported at countless games and life events.
“To his children and grandchildren, Frank was not just a public figure, but a steady and humble father and grandfather whose quiet strength and unwavering integrity provided an enduring example of leadership and love,” a family member shared.
Cignetti’s life was deeply rooted in his Catholic faith, which he credited for his resilience—including overcoming cancer decades earlier. He used his faith as a guiding principle to mentor and inspire those around him, exemplifying courage and compassion.
