Head-On Collision on Malahat Highway Leaves One Dead, Three Injured; Major Delays Expected

MILL BAY, B.C. — A head-on collision on the Malahat section of Highway 1 has resulted in a fatal crash, major injuries, and a full highway closure for the investigation. The incident occurred on January 10, 2026, south of Mill Bay.

According to the BC Highway Patrol and Shawnigan Lake RCMP, preliminary investigations indicate two vehicles collided head-on on the 1200 block of the highway. The force of the crash sent one vehicle down an embankment, while the second vehicle became fully engulfed in flames.

Fatalities and Injuries
Emergency responders pronounced one woman deceased at the scene. There were at least four total occupants involved in the crash; the condition of the remaining three individuals has not been confirmed, though they were transported to area hospitals.

Ongoing Investigation and Road Closures
The BC Highway Patrol’s specialized Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (CARS) team has been deployed to the scene to assist in determining the cause of the crash. Highway 1 remains closed at the crash site while investigators and emergency crews work.
