Former North Carolina Governor Jim Hunt, state's longest-serving chief executive, dies at 88
RALEIGH, N.C. – The state of North Carolina is mourning the passing of former Governor Jim Hunt, the state’s longest-serving governor and the father of current Lt. Gov. Rachel Hunt. He was 88 years old.

A 16-Year Legacy of Leadership

Governor Hunt, a Democrat, served as North Carolina’s 69th and 71st governor, holding office for a total of 16 years. Before his governorship, he was elected lieutenant governor in 1972, launching a career in public service that spanned decades and shaped modern North Carolina.

“His leadership and compassion left a lasting impact on the lives of countless North Carolinians,” Lt. Gov. Rachel Hunt said in a statement. “He devoted his life to serving the people of North Carolina, guided by a belief that public service should expand opportunity, strengthen communities, and always put people first.”

Praise from Across the Political Spectrum

Current Democratic Governor Josh Stein called Hunt a mentor and close friend. “I can think of no one who shaped North Carolina’s recent successes as much as Governor Jim Hunt,” Stein said.

Former Governor Roy Cooper described him as “the greatest governor in North Carolina history,” who brought “a caring and committed purpose to everything he did.”

Praise came from across the political aisle as well. Republican U.S. Senator Thom Tillis offered condolences, specifically praising Hunt’s lasting impact on public education and economic development in the state.
