EATONVILLE, Fla. — The town of Eatonville is mourning the loss of Mayor Anthony “Tony” Cole, a dedicated public servant and Central Florida basketball icon who passed away recently, just months after his induction into the Rollins College Sports Hall of Fame.
The town issued an official statement honoring Cole as “a servant leader whose heart beat for the people of Eatonville.” It continued, “Mayor Cole’s compassion and commitment to progress will forever be etched in the heart of Eatonville. We honor his life, leadership, and the indelible impact he made on generations past, present, and future.”
A Pillar of Central Florida Basketball
Beyond his civic duties, Cole was a foundational figure in the local sports community. His most prominent role was serving for over 30 years as an assistant coach for the Rollins College Tars women’s basketball team under Coach Glenn Wilkes, Jr.
Cole was instrumental in the team’s recruiting efforts and overall success, contributing to a legacy that included an average of over 20 wins per season and 16 appearances in the NCAA Division II Tournament. His dedication to the program was formally recognized earlier this year with his enshrinement in the Rollins Sports Hall of Fame.
A Legacy of Service On and Off the Court
Cole’s passing leaves a dual void in the Eatonville community and the Rollins College athletics family. He is remembered as a leader who tirelessly served his town and a mentor who helped shape the lives and careers of countless student-athletes.
Details regarding funeral services and a public remembrance have not yet been announced. The community is expected to gather in the coming days to celebrate the life and enduring legacy of a man who was equally committed to civic progress and athletic excellence.
