West Seneca, N.Y. — Authorities are investigating a fatal pedestrian crash that claimed the life of a 16-year-old boy on Clinton Street in West Seneca late last month. The victim, identified as Paul Alvarez, was struck by a pickup truck around 9:30 p.m. on December 18.
According to preliminary information, the driver was an off-duty Cheektowaga police officer who told investigators he briefly turned toward the back seat of his vehicle to check on his dog moments before the collision. The officer stated that when he looked back toward the road, the teen was only a few feet in front of the truck, leaving no time to react before impact.
After the crash, the officer instructed a bystander to call 911 and attempted to provide assistance to the injured teen until emergency responders arrived. Paul Alvarez was later pronounced dead from his injuries.
Officials confirmed that the officer voluntarily submitted to drug and sobriety testing, including a breathalyzer test that showed no alcohol in his system. He has not been charged, and his name has not been released, as the investigation remains active.
An on-duty Cheektowaga police lieutenant responded to the scene, and later accompanied a detective to the West Seneca Police Department, where the officer provided a formal deposition. The New York Attorney General’s Office has also launched an independent investigation and sent a detective to review the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Witnesses told investigators that the pedestrian was wearing dark clothing and was difficult to see due to limited lighting. The collision reportedly occurred in one of the darkest stretches of Clinton Street, roughly midway between two streetlights. Accounts from witnesses differ regarding where the teen was positioned on the roadway prior to being struck.
