Former coach dead, student critically injured in attempted murder-suicide at Stewartville High School
STEWARTVILLE, Minn. – A former high school coach is dead and a teenage student is fighting for his life after a shooting in a school parking lot early Friday morning, authorities say.

The Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of gunfire at Stewartville High School around 5:00 a.m. on December 12. Deputies found two individuals with gunshot wounds in the parking lot.

The Victims

The deceased has been identified as Logan Moyer, a former assistant wrestling coach for the Stewartville school district. Authorities believe he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The injured individual is a male teenage student-athlete who was transported to a nearby hospital for emergency surgery. The Sheriff’s Office reports the student remains in critical but stable condition.

Shooting During Team Departure

The shooting occurred as a bus was preparing to transport about 40 members of the school’s wrestling team to a scheduled meet. Several students and coaches were already on board.

“One of the teammates was walking in the parking lot when a gunshot was heard by others,” Sheriff Kevin Torgerson said during a press conference. “As students were trying to determine what had happened, they heard a second shot.”

Coaching staff found the injured student on the ground and rendered aid before emergency crews arrived.

Investigation and Community Response

Sheriff Torgerson confirmed that Moyer had previously been terminated from his coaching position. The motive for the shooting remains under active investigation.

“This is a very rare incident for our community and an emotional time for everyone involved,” Torgerson stated.

Stewartville Public Schools canceled all activities for the day. Students were safely reunited with families, and counselors were made available for the school community. Authorities have stressed there is no ongoing threat.

The Sheriff’s Office has scheduled a follow-up press conference for Monday, December 15, to provide further updates.
