Grand Island community mourns 18-year-old killed in Florida park shooting
LEESBURG, Fla. – An 18-year-old man with ties to Grand Island, Nebraska, has been identified as the victim in a fatal weekend shooting at a Florida park.

The Leesburg Police Department identified the victim as Juan Gomez Jr., 18.

The Shooting

Police were called to Berry Park at 2121 Johns Avenue in Leesburg shortly before 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 14, after a report of a possible shooting victim inside a vehicle.

Upon arrival, officers found Gomez inside a vehicle suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Despite life-saving efforts by Leesburg Fire-Rescue, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Active Investigation

The Leesburg Police Department’s detectives and crime scene unit are actively investigating. Authorities have not released information regarding a suspect or a motive for the shooting. No arrests have been announced.

“The investigation remains ongoing, and updates will be provided as new information becomes available,” a police spokesperson stated.
