NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The national healthcare community is mourning the loss of a foundational nursing leader. Dr. Sammie Mosier, the Senior Vice President and Chief Nurse Executive of HCA Healthcare, has passed away, the organization confirmed.

Dr. Mosier was one of the most influential nursing executives in the country, overseeing more than 99,000 registered nurses across HCA Healthcare’s vast network of hospitals and surgery centers.

A Leader Who Rose from the Bedside

Dr. Mosier’s distinguished 28-year career with HCA Healthcare began in 1996 as a medical-surgical nurse at Frankfort Regional Medical Center in Kentucky. Colleagues say her deep understanding of frontline nursing shaped her leadership philosophy, which was centered on empowering nurses and advocating for patient-centered care.

“Her unwavering commitment was to support the nurses on the front lines, believing they are the strength of our healthcare system,” a statement from HCA Healthcare colleagues noted.

Her educational credentials included a Doctorate in Healthcare Administration and board certification as a Nurse Executive.
