PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Zippel Elementary School is mourning the sudden loss of Josh Fuller, a beloved custodian and bus driver whose presence brought joy, kindness, and positivity to students and staff. Fuller passed away over the recent Christmas break, leaving a deep and lasting impact on the school community.
Josh was a familiar and cherished figure at Zippel, especially in the 3rd grade wing, where he worked each day to help keep the school running smoothly and ensure students felt safe and supported. Students affectionately called him “the grown-up with the big smile”, a reflection of his ability to make everyone feel seen, appreciated, and uplifted. Known for his fist bumps, high fives, and constant encouragement, Josh’s infectious energy left a mark on all who knew him.
In a message to families, Principal Mr. Hallett highlighted Josh’s importance to the school, writing, “Josh mattered here. He mattered to our students. He mattered to our staff. And he will be remembered with love,” emphasizing the profound loss felt across the Zippel community.
To help students cope with their grief, the school provided support upon their return. School counselor Mrs. Guerrette, along with counselors from other MSAD #1 schools, were available to offer guidance and comfort. Students also had opportunities to honor Josh’s memory through a memory wall and other activities, allowing them to share reflections, memories, and messages of kindness.
Families were encouraged to discuss the loss at home, recognizing that children respond to grief in different ways. While some may feel immediate sadness, others may have questions or take time to show their emotions. Parents were advised to offer simple reassurances such as, “You’re safe, you’re loved, and your family and school will help,” to help children navigate this difficult time.
Josh Fuller’s impact extended far beyond his daily responsibilities. He was a person who brought warmth and light to every interaction, fostering a sense of community wherever he went. His compassion, dedication, and joyful spirit left a lasting impression on students, colleagues, and families alike.
The Zippel Elementary School community continues to hold Josh’s family and loved ones close in their thoughts. His legacy will live on through the countless smiles he inspired, the relationships he nurtured, and the acts of kindness he shared.
Josh Fuller will be remembered not only as a devoted staff member but also as a friend, mentor, and treasured presence whose warmth, care, and positive influence will be felt at Zippel Elementary for years to come.
