WESTBROOK, Maine — The state’s arts, theater, and education communities are mourning the loss of Justin D. Stebbins, a celebrated theater artist, passionate educator, and cherished mentor whose passing has left a profound void. Originally from Virginia Beach, Virginia, Stebbins became a foundational and beloved figure in Westbrook’s creative scene.
Stebbins was renowned as much for his artistic talent as for his role as a guiding light who shaped countless students and colleagues. In rehearsal spaces, on stage, and in classrooms, he was known for bringing an infectious energy, deep empathy, and an unwavering ability to make others feel seen and valued.
“He was more than a performer or teacher,” said a longtime colleague. “Justin was the heart and soul of our creative community. His warmth and encouragement were transformative.”
A Scholar Dedicated to Transformative Education
His commitment to education was reflected in his academic pursuits. He studied Public Policy, Educational Leadership, and Teaching and Learning at the University of Southern Maine and completed interdisciplinary studies at Bates College. This academic foundation underscored his belief that education was about human connection and empowerment, not just instruction.
As a dance instructor, he was particularly noted for his patience and ability to inspire confidence. “Justin Stebbins was a good friend and a great dance instructor. He was the core of our dance community,” shared one friend. “I will miss the encouragement and patience he treated me with.”
A Legacy of Living Fully
Stebbins lived by a philosophy of gratitude and seizing the present, often quoting the sentiment, “No day but today!” In a message to his community, he once wrote, “I am honored to have had the opportunity to work with you all. Much love and here’s to the future.”
To those who knew him best, he was often described as an “angel”—a presence marked by profound compassion, humility, and love. His legacy endures in the countless individuals he inspired to live fully, create boldly, and embrace each moment with intention.
